Our Global Differences series presents real voices of people from across the globe telling us about their own countries, and the differences between these and the UK.
In this month's post on global differences, we hear from Zhelyo Vasilev, a Bulgarian working here in Manchester.
Name: Zhelyo Vasilev
Job / Profession: Teacher of Physics
Home country and town: Bourgas, Bulgaria
Native language: Bulgaria
How long have you been in the UK?
What was your first impression of the UK? It was very multicultural at the university and I could have friends from all over the world!
What did you find was the biggest difference between here and your home country? In large cities such as Manchester, you could interact with people from all over the world which was very unique.
What is the biggest misconception people in the UK have of your country? Many have a misconception that the standard of living is considerably lower than it actually is.
What’s the one place you’d say we have to visit in your country? Mountains - The Rila and Pirin mountains! They are absolutely gorgeous and so remote. Beach - Sinemorets, a gorgeous sea town with a beautiful delta with the river flowing in.
What’s the one dish or meal you’d really recommend? That's easy! Banitsa! : ) A lovely pastry that we often have for breakfast (and lunch...and dinner..)
What’s your favourite word in your own language? What does it mean in English? I'm gonna go with "Въй" (pronounced: vuy! ), it's an expression from my home town's dialect that we use when we are amazed. It translates to "Wooow!"
Is there anything you want to ask Zhelyo about his country?
